It is the stock security system of a 1984. The security light on dash will light and I will not get juice to the starter. Any suggestions on possible problem and ways to fix/ bypass it. Problem was infrequent, but now is quite constant.

now, does it utilize a "clicker" style security system, or is it one that recognizes the correct ignition key? perhaps soemthing with the ignition switch or cylinder itself has gone bad? or the key?

I've heard of problems with the VATS (Vehicle Anti-THeft System) chip which is in the ignition key having problems over time. I don't recall what the fix was (replacing the key or having to replace the entire cylinder) You probably have another set of ignition keys (the car usually comes with 2) Have you tried the other ignition key?

Not for sure of the Security system Operational characteristics of this model year. I bought the car in 1994 and the keys supplied were cut from regular blanks (no embedded digi-chip). Worked great for years, than the problem arose. I believe I need to purchase a owner/technical manual for this year. This will establish a baseline of definite technical understanding.

Take your key to the dealer. They will read it and give you the number of the chip.. If I recall it is 1 thru 10.
Call on of the aftermarket buys and order that number. I had the same problem on my 86. very easy to install.
takes less then 5 min. and under 20 USD
